Do you know the latest on Sensory Items?

NDIS legislation became much stricter on how sensory items can be funded since 3 October last year.

All toys (including sensory) and recreational equipment are no longer classed as NDIS supports and instead are an everyday expense.


NDIS funding cannot be used to claim sensory items unless:


Items are modified or adaptive and a recommendation report is submitted by an NDIS approved Allied Health professional detailing how the item is essential for a participant’s needs.


Note that weighted blankets and toys always need Planner approval as they are considered “High Risk”.

These changes affect all participants, regardless of whether a participant is plan managed, agency managed or self-managed.


For clarity, many plans, particularly children’s, now explicitly state that the purchase of sensory items are legislative exclusions.
