TRANSPORT – An easy guide to your travelling options

Transport assistance allows participants to travel independently, accessing appointments and their community.

If a participant is unable to drive or use public transport because of their disability, the NDIS may make provision for this in their plan.

Transport allowance is usually deposited from the NDIA directly into a participant’s bank account on a fortnightly basis.  If this isn’t a viable option, this budget may be accessed by a Plan Manager to manage on your behalf.  These funds are specifically for you to pay transport providers such as taxi companies or passenger vehicles.  These funds cannot be used for tipping or paying for petrol or informal supports.

Activity-based transport is funded from the budget Assistance with Social and Community Participation and is used to pay support workers to drive you around.  Note that a support worker’s time will be invoiced as well as the kilometres travelled. They may also charge non-labour costs for them to travel to and from where you are.  We always recommend seeking a quote or service agreement beforehand.

Training in travel independence is funded using Capacity Building funds. Skills training such as the use of public transport may be covered however the actual fares are not.  NDIA approval can be sought to use funding for driving lessons to learn how to drive a modified vehicle or if you have additional needs because of your disability.  This is a plan stated, quote required line item.

Modifications to privately owned vehicles may be covered if they are essential adaptations and the most appropriate option for a participant.  These are plan stated Assistive Technology.  The purchase of a specialised vehicle is not covered.
